Practicalities

Referral

You can either refer yourself by contacting me directly or alternatively, you may be referred by your GP or another health care professional. Confidentiality is assured at all times.

Initial consultation

In the initial session we will meet and discuss how counselling and psychological therapy might help you. This meeting lasts up to 50 min. This will give us the chance to see if I am the right person to help you. There is no obligation for further work and at this point it might just be all that you need. You might decide to take therapy now or take that decision at a later stage.

Therapy sessions

Sessions are held on an ongoing basis, normally weekly, at the same time and lasting for 50 min.

Fees
  • Fees: £120 per session
  • Sliding scale fees available for those with lower incomes.
  • You can pay by direct debit.

Please note that missed or cancelled sessions will be charged unless we are able to reschedule. The main reason for this is that for therapy to be effective commitment and regular attendance are essential.

Location

Currently I provide face-to-face (Gloucester Rd, SW7), in person, online therapy, telephone. I am fully insured for both public liabilities and professional indemnity and undertake regular supervision and professional development.

Frequently asked questions

What is counselling psychology?

Counselling psychology integrates counselling and psychotherapeutic concepts with the science of psychology. It combines the latest research in psychology and the evidence on therapeutic practice. This is very important as it allows the provision of effective updated therapy that is tailored to the different clients’ needs and difficulties presented.

A counselling psychologist trains for many years, usually 8 with a very strong practical component. They are trained in different therapeutic approaches and wield a large array of tools. They are highly adaptable, which allows them to work in a variety of settings: private practice and academia, NHS, industry, commerce, the voluntary sector, education, prisons. They are bound by the BPS code of ethics and conduct, and the HPC regulation body.

Counselling psychologists will have undertaken an extensive training at a post-graduate level and can draw on a wider range of skills when devising an individual treatment plan. This enables them to successfully treat a wider and more complex range of issues and contribute to a more research-based perspective of talking therapy.

What is the difference between a counselling psychologist, a counsellor, psychotherapist and a coach?

First is important to mention that they are all talking therapies and they should provide a safe confidential space for the client. They differ in the depth and focus of the training.

A counselling psychologist will be versatile in applying different therapy approaches and directing them according to what the client requires. A counsellor on the other hand, will typically have been trained briefly and be specialised solely in one approach.

A psychotherapist will have more years of training than a counsellor but will still specialise in mainly one approach.

A coach will work on setting goals and apply motivational techniques for achieving these but will not have the skills and experience to work on deeper psychological issues that underlie and maintain the difficulties. This typically limits the effectiveness of coaching for some groups of clients.
